Nylon and Polyester carpets

The Benefits of Synthetic Carpets, With Reference to Carpet Cleaning.

As a carpet cleaning company, we have worked with every carpeting material there is, and gained a lot of experience working with synthetic carpets. There are a lot of tricks to keeping them clean and well maintained.

In this article, we will compare the strong and weak sides of the most popular synthetic carpeting materials – nylon and polyester.

Nylon is probably the more popular of the two. It has some very nice properties:

  • It is very elastic. It stretches out to a third of its original length and returns safely to its original size. This makes it especially good for high-traffic areas with a lot of wear and tear.
  • It has good abrasion resistance. Better than wool even!
  • It’s durable. You can leave it under extremely heavy weight for years, and it still regains its original shape and size.
  • Nylon does not absorb a lot of water – less than 8 % of its weight. Besides, it dries extremely quickly, which makes carpet cleaning even easier.
  • Lastly, because it’s made of inorganic materials, it does not rot or mold.

Nylon has one big con, however. The paints used for dyeing it are not very stable and can make carpet cleaning a bit tricky. You must choose your cleaning agent carefully, because it can cause fading and bleaching. We recommend you hire a carpet cleaning company.

Polyester is also very good. It has the following advantages:

  • Unlike nylon, polyester has a very resistant color. Its dyes are very strong and resistant to bleaching, fading and discoloring.
  • It is resistant to water based stains as well.
  • It dries quickly and absorbs very little water, which is great for carpet cleaning.

Polyester also has a big flaw, however, it is very vulnerable to oil-based stains. They bind with the fibers on a chemical level and become a permanent part of the carpet. This is a big disadvantage, and if you are considering getting a new rug, we advise you to contact California Carpet Care. We can help you with either advice, or proper carpet cleaning services.
